As the legend goes, in the area of Qian (now Guizhou Province) there were no donkeys.

Later, a meddlesome man transported one by boat from somewhere else, but he found it of no use.

So he left the donkey at the foot of a mountain and let it do as it pleased.

A tiger in the mountain, which had never seen a donkey before, thought this huge monster was a divine beast and was rather scared.

Hence, the tiger hid itself in the woods and observed the donkey covertly. After a while, seeing the donkey stand there without movement,

the tiger came out of the woods slowly, approached it cautiously, but couldn’t figure out yet what monster it was.

One day, while the tiger was observing, the donkey suddenly gave a loud cry, which frightened the tiger so much that it took to its heels, for fear that the donkey would devour it.

Yet when turning its head, it discovered that the donkey was still at the same place, without stirring a bit.

The tiger again slowly approached the donkey, gradually got used to its neighs and felt it wasn’t frightful at all.

The tiger came nearer and nearer, and even tried to tease the donkey at times with its paws.

Being very much annoyed, the donkey gave the tiger a good kick. Thus, the tiger felt very pleased and said to itself:

So that’s all the tricks it has.

The tiger gave a big roar, jumped up and pounced ferociously upon the donkey, bit into its throat, devoured its flesh, and went away satisfied.

Tweedledum and Tweedledee

In the past, the grandson of a prime minister was a notorious spendthrift.

He squandered all the family property and couldn’t even afford his own meals, so he often borrowed rice from others.

once he borrowed another bag of carried it half- way and couldn’t go any further, so he rested by the roadside.

At this moment, a poor man in rags happened to pass by. He called this poor man, set the pay and let the poor man carry the rice for him.

Unexpectedly, after carrying the rice for some distance, the poor man also panted and couldn’t walk any grandson complained:

“I am the grandson of a prime minister. It is natural that I can neither lift with my hands nor carry on my shoulder anything heavy.

But you are from a poor family. Why are you also so useless?”

Unwilling to give in, the poor man glared and retorted:

“How can you blame me? I am not from a poor family. I am the grandson of a prime minister, too.”

The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens.

They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating man’s behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distiller’s grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure them into traps and cursed:

“Humph! Do you think we don't know your tricks? We’ll never be taken in!”

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldn’t bear to part with it.

Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look they saw no one there, they would turn back;and after they turned back,

就是走了,也要回过头来望望。回头望不见人,便又转过来;

they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation, they finally said to themselves:

“Just for a taste of the wine. It won’t matter as long as we don’t get drunk.”

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the they got drunk, they forgot everything.

Every gorilla put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.
