一般过去时表现在:
(1) 少数动词want, wonder, think, hope, intend等的一般过去时表示委婉的现在。如:
Did You Want to tell me something? 你想告诉我什么吗?。
I wondered if you could have a word with me. 请问您能否和我谈一谈。
I thought you might like some flowers. 我想您也许想要些花。
I hoped you could help me with my English. 我希望你能帮我学英语。

(2) 在宾语从句中，因时态呼应的关系，可用一般过去时表示现在。如:
I didn’t know you were in London. How long have you been here? 我不知道你在伦敦，你在这儿多久了?
I clearly forgot it was my birthday today. 我确实忘了今天是我的生日。
一般现在时的用法:
(1) 表示现在瞬间的动作。如:
I send you my best wishes. 我向你们表示良好的祝愿。
I great appreciate your kindness. 我感谢你的好意。
The police don’t accept her story. 警方不相信她讲的事。
(2) 可用于动作解说、剧情介绍、新闻标题、图片说明等。如:

现在完成时与一般过去时的区别:
现在完成时表示的是与现在有关联的过去事件;而一般过去时则与现在毫无关系，只是单纯的过去的情况。比较:
I have lost my pen, so I have to buy one. 我丢了钢笔，所以得去买一枝。
I lost my pen, but found it later. 我丢了钢笔，但后来找到了。
当句子中有表示明确过去的状语时，只能用一般过去时，不能用现在完成时。如:
他一周以前动身去了纽约。
误:He has left for New York a week ago.
正:He left for New York a week ago.
另外，当句首为疑问词when时，其后可用一般过去时，不能用现在完成时。如:
你什么时候和他首次见面的?
误:When have you first met him?
正:When did you first meet him?
